Research Strategy, Profile and Model
Advanced distributed computing and virtualization technologies are expected to transform the way we do computing, communication, networking, and solve large-scale scientific, engineering, and business problems in the next few years.
Our research innovations will be part of the distributed infrastructures and resource provisioning platforms that will fulfill the demands of future innovative scientific and business processes.
The members of the group try to fulfil the following criteria when doing research:
We believe that the University serves society through activities related to its educational mission and transferring the results of its research. Today research should be development in a medium term and innovation in a longer term.
Ongoing research lines address the challenges of Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) Cloud Computing:
Since its foundation in 2002, the group has been involved in several research and development initiatives in Grid and Cloud Computing. The DSA-Research Group is leading several research and development activities related to dynamic allocation and scheduling of jobs on Grid infrastructures (Globus GridWay Metascheduler), dynamic managment of virtual machines and interoperation across Cloud infrastructures (OpenNebula Virtual Infrastructure Engine), and federation of Grid infrastructures (Grid4Utility). The results of the research have been published in more than 90 papers in the leading journals and proceedings in the last seven years and incorporated in several technology products that have been transferred to the industry and the research community. The members of the group actively participate in several Open Grid Forum groups and in the Program Committee of the most important workshops and conference related to parallel, distributed, grid and cloud computing. The group is currently coordinating the Spanish Initiative in Grid Middleware and the Working Group on SOI and Grids of INES - Spanish Technology Platform on Software and Services; and is involved in NESSI. The group participates in the Globus Alliance, RESERVOIR, EGEE and BEinGRID projects.
A DSA-Research Group research and development effort seeks to advance the knowledge and technology in a given domain. There are two major outcomes from a research activity. One is rendered in a technology product incorporating the technological innovations of the activity. This, in turn, conveys intellectual property to standardization bodies by providing for example a reference implementation; and Industry and Academia through the transferring of the technology. A second outcome of a research activity more directly transfers the intellectual contribution to the Industry and Academia through research papers. This intellectual conveyance influences also the standardization bodies through exchange of ideas and experiences that allows the evolving and enhancing of specifications and provides requirements and use cases.
